First Wednesday: History of the Dipsea Trail with Barry Spitz In-Person
Lone Tree Trail, connecting Mill Valley to Stinson Beach and now known at the Dipsea Trail, appeared on the first published hiking map of Marin County in the late 19th century. In 1904, William Kent opened the oceanfront Dipsea Inn. That year, a group of Olympic Club hikers held an informal dash from the Mill Valley train depot to the new inn. A year later, the club founded the iconic Dipsea Race, which continues to this day.
The renamed Dipsea Trail (though the Lone Tree redwood still stands) has undergone many changes in the 120 years since.
The story of the Trail and those changes will be presented in a talk, accompanied with historical photographs, by Dipsea Race historian and finish line announcer Barry Spitz. He is the author of Dipsea, The Greatest Race, Mount Tamalpais Trails, and histories of Mill Valley and Marin County.
