First Wednesday: The Waldo Grade, with Mike Moyle In-Person

The 1930's saw a burst of highway construction in Marin that culminated in the construction of the Waldo Grade to coincide with the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge in 1937.  The ambitious 3.6-mile "Marin Approach," which runs through the hills above Sausalito from the bridge to Waldo Point, required the excavation of millions of cubic yards of material and the boring of the first of today's two tunnels.  After the opening of the original undivided four-lane roadway, additional projects were undertaken in the following decades to widen the highway, add a second tunnel and improve safety.

MIKE MOYLE is a Sausalito resident who has lived near the Waldo Grade for over forty years.  He has been active in local history for over a decade through the Sausalito Historical Society and as the Historian for the Sausalito Portuguese Cultural Center.
