First Wednesday: History of the Tourist Club and the California Alpine Club, with Gareth Loy and Steve Quarles

First Wednesday: History of the Tourist Club and the California Alpine Club, with Gareth Loy and Steve Quarles In-Person

The Tourist Club and California Alpine Club reflect over a century of Bay Area outdoor adventure and community spirit. Gareth Loy, the Tourist Club’s History Committee Chair since 2017, will explore the club’s roots in Die Naturfreunde (The Nature Friends) in Europe and its establishment in San Francisco. He’ll also recount the daring month-long High Sierra treks undertaken by members in the 1920s, embodying the club’s passion for wilderness exploration. Steve Quarles, historian of the California Alpine Club, will trace its beginnings to 1913, when young hikers inspired by newspaper articles organized Sunday outings on Mount Tamalpais. By 1914, the club had 84 members, united by their love of nature and a $2 annual fee. Today, the Alpine Club and Tourist Club remain enduring presences on Mount Tam’s trails, carrying on their century-old hiking traditions.
