Mushroom Naming in Action with Else Vellinga In-Person

Else Vellinga will talk about how mushrooms get their names, what has and is done about naming California mushrooms, and why some of your favorite mushrooms might suddenly have a new name.

Else Vellinga is a mycologist who is interested in naming and classifying mushroom species in California and beyond, especially Parasol mushrooms. She has described 22 species as new for California. She got her training at the national herbarium in the Netherlands, and her PhD at the university of Leiden.

Her interests go beyond taxonomy, and she loves natural history stories of all kinds of organisms. The mysterious world of spores is slowly being opened, and she likes to share the new developments in research and discoveries. Else describes herself as a Dutch, cat-loving, knitting mycologist, who lives in Berkeley, CA.
